Police officer choked following pursuit in central Alberta

EDMONTON — A 36-year-old man is facing several charges after a police officer was choked following a pursuit in Eckville Friday night.

Two Sylvan Lake RCMP officers were on patrol in the central Alberta town around 11 p.m. when they saw a vehicle narrowly miss hitting a parked car. The vehicle swerved a couple more times, nearly hitting two police vehicles.

The officers started to follow the suspect’s car when it crashed into a power pole; it then hit the cement barriers at a nearby gas station.

The man inside the vehicle ran away and once the officers caught up with him one of the officers was choked. The police officer was treated at the Red Deer Regional Hospital and has since been released.

Darrel James Jamieson of Rocky Mountain House has been charged with several offences including impaired operation, dangerous driving, resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer and choking to overcome resistance.

Jamieson is scheduled to appear in Red Deer Provincial Court on March 23.

Eckville is located about 45 kilometres northwest of Red Deer.
