TORONTO – The Ontario Lung Association is teaming up with singer Joseph Neale, on their Breathing As One campaign to raise funds and awareness about lung disease.

“This [campaign] will bring together all doctors, our patients, philanthropists, co-operations, to solve the issue of lung health,” said George Habib,  the president and CEO of Ontario Lung Association.

Neale was diagnosed with lung cancer three years ago and has undergone two surgeries, including the removal of his right lung.

Despite losing part of his lung, he continues to sing to promote awareness of lung disease and give back to people suffering from this disease.

“He really is a fantastic representation of what we can accomplish when we work together. The effects of research can be realized in improving survival, but also improving the quality of life,”  Dr. John Granton, the head of Respirology at the University Health Network, said.

More than 26,000 Canadians are diagnosed with lung cancer each year and nearly 20,500 people die each year from the disease, according to the Canadian Cancer Society. Fifty-six Canadians die from the disease every day, according to the society.

“The unfortunate reality is one in five Canadians have lung disease, but we are sort of handicapped in moving forward because of the gross underfunding,” Granton said.
