Man charged with sexual interference at Calgary dayhome

ABOVE: A day home at the centre of a sex assault case is still up and running. A 51 year old man who lives in the house in Rocky Ridge is accused of abusing a four year old boy. Nancy Hixt reports.

CALGARY – Police have laid charges against a man accused of fondling a young boy at a northwest Calgary dayhome.

The incident was reported to police in January by the parents of a four-year-old boy who said he was touched by a man at Sue’s Dayhome on more than one occasion in December of 2014 when the pair was alone together.

Police have charged 51-year-old Miles Jarvis Clark with sexual interference with a child under 16 years. Clark lives at the dayhome in question, which is unlicensed, but is not a childcare worker.

He was arrested on Thursday and released on the condition that he not be in the dayhome during business hours. Clark is set to appear in court on Feb. 26.

Police say the dayhome operator is no longer cooperating with their investigation, and won’t provide police with a list of clients.

“Initially, yes she was cooperative, but as the investigation has proceeded, things have changed,” explained Staff Sgt. Melanie Oncescu of the Child Abuse Unit at a Tuesday news conference. “When we requested the [client list] she cited FOIP concerns.”

Parents who may have had children attend Sue’s Dayhome, located in the 0-100 block of Rockyspring Rise N.W., are asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234.

Police say the accused wasn’t in the dayhome regularly, but when he was he would have had opportunities to be alone with the children.

“The dayhome wouldn’t have been shut down, because it was a private day home,” explained Sgt. Oncescu. “So whether or not there’s still children attending the dayhome, that is unknown.”

Police are not investigating any other allegations against Clark, who neighbours say is the dayhome operator’s husband.

Global News spoke with one mother who sends her son to the dayhome, who said she believes the allegations are false and will continue to use the facility for her child care needs.

“Sue is amazing,” said the parent, who asked to remain anonymous. “Through this entire thing, her first thing that she [said] is ‘I can’t believe this is happening to my children.’ And by her children, she means the children that go to the dayhome.”
