UPDATE: On Monday, Jan. 12, police said no charges would be laid in this case.
EDMONTON – Police responded to a weapons complaint at a south Edmonton home and learned there were up to eight children inside.
“Just after 8:15 this morning, we received a call to a south-side residence of a male making some threats involving a handgun,” said EPS Inspector Regan James.
“Information from inside the house was that there were a number of small children and two adult females in the residence.”
Police shut down 106 Street between 51 and 55 Avenues for about two hours while they tried to make contact with someone inside the house.
“We finally did make contact with the individual we wanted to speak to in relation to those threats,” said James. “Those threats were posted on Facebook.
“We were successful in getting all the residents of the house out and then finally, in the end, with tactical intervention – and a number of other things – we were able to take one suspect into custody.”
James said there were as many as seven or eight children inside the home at the time.
“We had children ranging in age between four to 16, I believe,” he said.
“Those kids are all now being spoken to by the crisis unit or Children Services and they’re all in safe hands.”
Police are investigating. On Monday, Jan. 12, they said charges would not be laid.
