REGINA – The Saskatchewan SPCA has announced their contract with the Ministry of Agriculture to enforce animal welfare will be their last.

The Saskatchewan SPCA, responsible for enforcing The Animal Protection Act in the province for the last 40 years, will now be focusing on programs and services related to education and prevention of animal cruelty.

“Animal welfare is and always will be a priority for us,” Saskatchewan SPCA Board of Directors President Constance Roussel said.

“However, after much discussion our board felt that we can better serve the animals and the public by focusing on education and prevention. We thank the ministry for working with us through this transition and look forward to continuing to work with them under our new focus.”

The Ministry of Agriculture is looking into other options to investigate animal cruelty and neglect cases in the province.

“The humane treatment and well-being of animals continues to be a priority for us,” Stewart said. “Our ministry will continue to work with all parties involved to ensure a smooth transition.”

The Saskatchewan SPCA was established in 1928. The current contract expires on March 31, 2015.
