A wild police chase started in Swift Current at 8:30 a.m. Monday.

RCMP say a 77 year old woman was forced out of her car in a local business’s parking lot by a 38 year old man. He then got in the car and drove away.

Police put out a description of the stolen car, and a driver called in saying he was right behind that car on Highway 1 about 20 kilometres east of town.

Officers caught up with the stolen car in Rush Lake. They tried to deploy a spike belt, but the suspect avoided it. He then crossed the median several times before entering the town of Herbert.

That’s when he drove into the front end of an RCMP vehicle, tried to cross the median but lost control and hit a hay bale, and then slid into the same RCMP vehicle again.

The RCMP officer in the car was not injured. The suspect was taken to hospital, but no word on how seriously he was hurt. He remains behind bars.
