CALGARY – A new cellphone tower being built in the community of Bankview is being met by opposition.

A public forum to discuss the cell tower, being built by Rogers, was held at a southwest Scouts Canada location on Monday night.

It was a packed house, with many area residents standing at a podium to voice their concern.

The contentious 118-foot cell tower is actually an extension on an existing tower, and is being built in the 1900 block of 19th Street S.W.

Community organizers say they have been shut out of the process, even though Industry Canada says Rogers didn’t have to submit an application to modify the tower.

Rogers had previously put construction on hold so it could discuss the project with area residents, but members of the Bankview Community Association say construction has continued, and that a 40 foot foundation rebar was inserted into the ground last week.

Normally the city recommends cell-phone towers be at least 100 metres away from homes. However, the Rogers tower would be less than 40 metres away from some homes.
