Potential for heavy overnight snowfall in Edmonton, surrounding areas

EDMONTON – The City of Edmonton, and much of central Alberta, has the potential of seeing anywhere between five and 15 centimetres of snow by Friday afternoon.

Environment Canada says the snow is expected to intensify Wednesday evening and overnight, due to a low pressure system.

Within the Edmonton city limits, Global News Weather Specialist Kevin O’Connell expects between five and seven centimetres of snow to fall.

Snow in April is not an unusual phenomenon in Edmonton, but that doesn’t mean people have to like it.

“April is typically the type of month where anything can happen and it certainly is happening this time,” said Global News Weather Specialist Mike Sobel.

“I know it’s very frustrating, but if you look back into the history and the records and that type thing, the month of April… this is what we expect.”

The average daytime high for April is 12C. So far this month, Sobel says Edmonton has been above the 10 degree mark eight out of the 17 days. However, he adds the temperatures haven’t been consistent.

“We haven’t had a number of warm days and then a number of cold days. It’s been like two warm days, two cold days, two warm days, two cold days,” Sobel explained.

About two centimetres of snow, combined with wind gusting up to 40 km/h, caused slippery road conditions in the Capital Region early Thursday morning. By 7 a.m., police had already been called to several collision related to the road conditions.

A pickup truck rolled over on the westbound Anthony Henday near the 50 Street exit around 5 a.m. One person was taken by ambulance to hospital. Westbound traffic was down to one lane on the Henday.
