CALGARY – A Calgary officer has been cleared of any wrongdoing in a police shooting last year, during which the suspect slammed his vehicle into a southeast home.
Police were investigating a complaint in the 2800 block of 12 Ave. S.E. in November of 2013, when they were approached by a neighbour who complained about a suspicious pickup truck parked nearby.
The neighbour said the vehicle had been idling for a few hours, and the man in the driver’s seat appeared to be sleeping.
Police approached the vehicle and spoke with the driver, before he backed up the truck without warning.
The vehicle stalled, and one of the offers walked in front of the truck, telling the suspect not to move the vehicle.
However, the suspect re-started the vehicle and began driving toward the officer in front of him.
It was at that point that the second officer on scene fired his gun twice, striking the driver in the neck with one bullet.
The officer in front of the vehicle managed to get out of the way without being injured.
The truck continued to travel forward, crossing the street and crashing into a house.
Three residents were at home at the time, and one narrowly missed being hit by the vehicle, which became stuck in the house.
The suspect was taken to hospital in serious, potentially life-threatening condition.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) launched an investigation into the shooting, as is standard in any officer-involved incident.
On Thursday, ASIRT announced the police officer who discharged his service pistol would not be charged with any criminal offences.
