A speed limit of 30 km/h is in playground zones around all of Edmonton's elementary and junior high schools. The speed limit is in effect every day from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The mother of a 13-year-old Edmonton girl who suffered serious injuries when she and another girl were struck by a school bus in the city's southwest last week has written an open letter to the mayor, calling for changes to the speed limit.

One driver was clocked at 100 km/h in a 30 km/h zone, according to the City of Edmonton's traffic safety office. The infraction comes with a mandatory court appearance.

The city has done a double check of 406 playground speed zones that have been installed over the past year. It was done at the request of city council because to them, some didn't make any sense. In 68 locations they were right.

City council took a second look at the playground zone rules Tuesday and decided to get rid of 41 across Edmonton.

Edmonton city councillors will debate speed limits next week that will likely get rid of the confusing mix of 50 km/h to 30 km/h and back again several times in one stretch of road.
