Growth in Edmonton may have slowed due to a struggling economy and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but city hall is looking to the day when two-million people call Alberta's capital home.

One of the main aspects of the plan is a focus on redevelopment as opposed to new developments. 

The 2019 Census has found Edmonton's population now sits at 972,223. The city is projected to reach one million by the end of 2020.

It's city census time again and this year's survey will be available to fill out online beginning Monday.

According to Statistics Canada, there were 50,560 children under the age of four in Edmonton in 2011. In 2016, that number jumped to 88,120.

Edmonton is one of the fastest-growing cities in Canada and according to a new report from the city, that isn't expected to slow down anytime soon.

The latest census shows Edmonton saw "moderate growth" between 2014 and 2016. The city's population grew by 2.5 per cent, to reach nearly 900,000.
