Calgarians are helping out the city's less fortunate during the extended cold snap.

Southwestern Alberta got a blast of wintry weather on Tuesday as a band of snow swept across the region, dropping upwards of 40 centimetres in some areas. 

It might not be quite as warm as it should be, but Calgarians can expect better weather soon.

The City of Calgary said the delay in opening its athletic parks is due to extended cold temperatures and heavy snowfall amounts.

Traffic is flowing smoothly again on Highway 1 at Old Banff Coach Road.

A winter storm warning was issued for Calgary and area on Wednesday, with as much as 35 centimetres of snow expected to fall. 

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.
