Last July, more than 80 per cent of the Peace Bridge's glass panels were shattered in an act of vandalism in Calgary.

The city said the steel tension cables will "reduce costs" for ongoing maintenance but did not specify how much it would be saving.

Police were called to the Peace Bridge at around 4 a.m. on Sunday for reports of a man shattering 70 glass windowpanes along the bridge. 

Police said witnesses reported a man in his 40s was using a hammer and bricks to break the panels. 

After much controversy over its cost, a single source contract and construction delays, Calgary's Peace Bridge has become an iconic symbol in the city over the last decade.

Pedestrians and cyclists in downtown Calgary won’t be able to access the Peace Bridge for a short period starting on Monday, June 8.

The Calgary rally was organized to draw attention to the protests that have been going on since April by more than 90 indigenous groups who say the pipeline is a threat to the Missouri River, which is the main water supply for the nearby standing rock reservation.
