DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Dubai’s police chief says a suspect in the killing of a Hamas operative in this city-state has been arrested in Canada but that the arrest is being covered up.
Lt.-Gen. Dahi Khalfan Tamim told broadcaster Al-Arabiya on Tuesday that Canada was the location of the arrest. He had previously said only that the arrest was in a western country.
Tamim says Canada told Dubai officials not to make the arrest public.
In Ottawa, the federal government had no immediate comment on his remarks.
Canada’s consul general in Dubai, Kris Panday, told The Associated Press he has no comment.
Hamas commander Mahmoud al-Mabhouh was killed January 19 by a hit squad Dubai police believe was sent by Israel’s Mossad spy agency.
