Aaron Carter files for bankruptcy

TORONTO — Singer Aaron Carter is broke.

The 25-year-old has filed for bankruptcy, listing total assets of $8,232.16 and liabilities of $2.2 million.

Carter, who performs Nov. 24 at the Fortune Sound Club in Vancouver, owes $1.4 million in back taxes and more than $31,000 to American Express.

The pop star lists laptops, musical instruments and a flat screen TV among his assets.

According to Carter’s filing, he earns an average of about $2,000 per month — almost exactly what he spends. He said he is living with a relative.

In addition to his music career, Carter competed on Dancing with the Stars, appeared in a reality show with his brother Nick Carter of Backstreet Boys and starred in the Off-Broadway production of The Fantasticks.

Carter, who was arrested in 2008 for having a small amount of marijuana in his car, checked into a rehab facility in 2011 to deal with unspecified addiction issues.

During his appearance on Global’s The Morning Show in September, Carter explained what he did with the money in his trust account when he turned 18.

“I invested most of the money that I had made into producing gear and learned how to become a producer,” he said.

Carter said he prayed for the opportunity to get back out on the road.
