Alberta election 2023 results: Edmonton-Decore

Global News is projecting Sharif Haji will win the Edmonton-Decore seat for the Alberta New Democrat Party.

Edmonton-Decore is a provincial riding located in the city of Edmonton. This riding is currently represented by Alberta New Democratic Party MLA Chris Nielsen, who first took office in 2015.

Nielsen collected 8,789 votes, winning 47.54 per cent of the vote in the 2019 Alberta provincial election.

For the 2023 election, there is no incumbent as Nielsen lost nomination to Sharif Haji, who is the executive director at The Africa Centre.

History

Edmonton-Decore was created in 2004 during a boundary redistribution. Janice Sarich of the Progressive Conservative party held the seat in the riding from 2008 until 2015.

Neilsen won the riding decisively in 2015, receiving 67 per cent of the vote, compared to 18 per cent of the vote for then-incumbent Sarich.

The riding includes several north Edmonton neighbourhoods, north of Yellowhead Trail, east of 97 Street, west of 66 Street and south of 167 Avenue.
