Canucks can’t close against Coyotes

Vancouver’s recent overtime magic came to an end in Phoenix tonight.

Antoine Vermette scored in the sixth round of the shootout, as Vancouver lost to the Phoenix Coyotes 2-3.

The Canucks had three attempts to win the game in the shootout, but Chris Higgins, Daniel Sedin, and Ryan Kesler all missed on their attempts, and Henrik Sedin fanned on his attempt to keep the game continuing after Vermette scored.

It was the Canucks’ first game in a demanding four-game road trip that sees Vancouver play entirely against teams higher than them in the Western Conference standings.

And it got off to a bad start, with Radim Vrbata scoring his sixth goal of the season just 1:15 into the game.

But the Canucks recovered in the second period, with Dam Hamhuis scoring his third goal of the season 25 seconds into the second period, followed by Ryan Kesler scoring his team-leading ninth at 4:15 on the powerplay.

The lead wouldn’t last however, as Shane Doan scored at 17:39 of the second, tying the game up until overtime.

An announced crowd of 13,459 were in Jobing.com Arena, with many of them on their feet for the Canucks in the shootout.

Roberto Luongo made 31 saves for Vancouver, who moved to 10-5-2 on the season. Phoenix is now 11-3-2.
