It looks like TV and the Internet are about to take another big step forward in convergence. Last week, a small company called ZillionTV was launched in the U.S., with the support of almost every content provider, including ABC, NBC, FOX, Sony Pictures and others.

ZillionTV is a set-top box that plugs into your TV and your Internet connection, delivering on-demand TV — over the Internet — for free.

The box costs only $100 and there are no monthly fees. There will be ads, just like traditional television, but you will never see a cable bill again.

Looking at the number of major players backing this new product, there’s a good chance that Zillion is the future of TV. It’s also another added pressure on the media industry, especially here in Canada, where broadcasters are trying to get the CRTC to fix the model for conventional television.
