Six people are dead, including a 73-year-old suspect, after a shooting at a Vaughan, Ont. condo building Sunday evening, officials say.
In a press conference around 11 p.m., York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween said emergency crews responded to an active shooting call around 7:20 p.m. at a building on Jane Street, just north of Rutherford Road.
“Once the officers arrived, they were met with with … a horrendous scene where numerous victims were deceased,” MacSween said.
MacSween said a seventh person was also injured, taken to hospital and is expected to survive.
An officer discharged their firearm and as a result the suspect died, MacSween said.
The province’s Special Investigations Unit, which investigates the conduct of officers in incidents that have resulted in death, serious injury, or alleged sexual assault, has been notified to investigate the suspect’s death, he said.
The SIU said it is investigating the interaction between police and the suspect which they confirmed is a 73-year-old man. A post-mortem is scheduled for Tuesday.
A source close to the investigation said the suspected gunman lived in the condo building and that the victims were found in different condo units.
No officers were injured in the incident.
York Region Paramedics said they responded to the scene with five ambulances, two special response vehicles, and one multi-patient vehicle.
MacSween said officers were working to clear the building, but added that there was “no further threat to the community at this point.”
“Right now (we) just offer our sincere condolences to the victims’ families,” he said.
“We’re in the process right now of doing notifications to those families.”
York police’s homicide unit is investigating.
“It’s going to take us some time to determine the motive in this investigation and what drew this person here,” MacSween said.
In an update Monday morning, police said any residents that were evacuated have been able to return to their units as it’s been deemed safe following a thorough search by officers.
