TORONTO – How does one become a convincing zombie?

“It’s tough,” jokes Atticus Mitchell, who plays one in the new TV movie Bunks. “Lots of research.”

In fact, Mitchell credits the physical transformation with helping him feel undead.

“You sit in the chair and it’s two hours of make-up and you see yourself and you really go, ‘Wow, I am a zombie,’” he explained during an appearance on Global Toronto’s The Morning Show with co-star Aidan Shipley.

Both young actors are fans of the zombie genre.

“It’s the survival aspect,” explained Mitchell. “It’s so deeply rooted within us as a people.”

Added Shipley: “Who doesn’t want to talk about what they would do if it was the end of the world?”

Bunks, partly filmed in Winnipeg, is about brothers (Shipley and Dylan Schmid) who sneak into Camp Bushwack as counselors and take charge of a group of young campers.

After a scary campfire story comes to life, they’re forced to fight off a zombie invasion and save the camp.

Bunks airs Oct. 27 on Disney XD.

Mitchell was born and raised in Toronto but didn’t get bitten by the acting bug until he was cast as the queen in a school production of Snow White.

He went on to find success with roles in the TV series How to be Indie and My Babysitter’s a Vampire and in this year’s big screen thriller The Colony.

Shipley has had roles on TV and in movies while studying acting and directing at Toronto’s Ryerson University.

He said his love for acting came from working as a child on the stage at the renowned Stratford Festival in his hometown.

“It was hard not to get the bug in Stratford,” he said. “It’s a theatrical city. It was unbelievable training and a great experience.”
