As the Bisons approach Friday’s game versus Saskatchewan — one that’s critically important to their season — the players can look to linebacker Thomas Miles for inspiration. If their play is as strong as Miles’ beard is, a home playoff game is a sure thing.
“I started growing one last year but I started it during the season. This year I got a couple of months head start on it. I figure if I’m gonna look crazy, now is the year to do it — before I graduate and have to look professional.”
“Crazy” sounds about right. Framing his smile, Miles has a long, chunky, pointy beard that would seem more fitting alongside James Hetfield on stage than in the middle of the Bisons defence.
“I try not to really look in the mirror too much.”
He’s not alone. Five or six teammates are letting themselves grow this season, including his defensive mate Lauren Kroeker and offensive lineman Tyler Fabbri.

Outside fellow dudes on campus, the beards don’t get much play.
“Whoa…nice beard,” Miles hears from the guys. But, he adds, “That’s all guys. For sure. Girls … not a fan.”
For Miles the beard has become a bit of a family affair.
“I’ve got a cousin that plays for (the University of Toronto) and he’s growing out a beard too. His is the whole thing, but it’s getting crazy too.
“I gotta wait till my cousin gets back from Toronto at Christmas and then we’ll get a couple of pictures, and then we’re both going to shave them off.”
Bisons play the Huskies in a game that will likely decide second place in Canada West (and who hosts a home playoff game). Tune in to News Hour Final at 10 p.m. to see how they’re doing.
