UBC RCMP, along with campus security, are focusing their patrols on areas of the campus where women could be walking alone, following a sexual assault on Sunday.
“Obviously we’re very concerned about this,” says Sgt. Drew Grainger.
“We’re very aware and very vigilant to the issue.”
Grainger says the 20-year-old student was returning home at 3:30 a.m. when she was approached from behind by a man who came out of a stairwell.

The man attempted to take the woman’s coat off and put his hand under her skirt.
The woman screamed for help and broke free, and the suspect then fled on foot.
“The two recent attacks were in residential areas,” says Grainger, “so we are reminding women, particularly younger women, that they are of course vulnerable.”
The other attack took place September 28.
The suspect in this most recent attack is described as Caucasian, and in his mid- to late-20s. He is approximately 5’10″ with a medium build and was wearing a dark hoodie.
Police are asking for help in identifying the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call the University RCMP at 604-224-1322 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
Grainger says everyone walking on campus at night should be vigilant of their surroundings and to walk in groups if possible.
