Of immediate concern are particles in the air, especially chemicals in the smoke.

The particle matter was concentrated enough to be a concern but officials now say the risk to exposure from the chemicals has been reduced as the smoke plume is rapidly dispersing.

A local state of emergency was declared to allow the town to utilize the resources of the provincial fire commission and emergency measures organization.

A “shelter-in-place” is recommended for residents within a one kilometre radius of the fire to prevent inhalation of smoke.

That includes staying indoors, closing and locking all windows and exterior doors, turning off all fans, heating and air conditioning systems and closing fireplace dampers.

Officials are asking people to stay away from the landfill and stay indoors as much as possible until the fire is out
