Local state of emergency in Kindersley after landfill fire

KINDERSLEY, Sask. – A local state of emergency has been declared in a western Saskatchewan town.

Fire broke out at the landfill in Kindersley on Monday evening just after 8:30 p.m.

The blaze was contained six hours later but is expected to burn for several more days.

There is a risk that a change in wind direction or other factors could cause the fire to spread beyond the existing barrier.

The local state of emergency was called due to poor air quality and to allow the town to utilize the resources of the provincial fire commission and emergency measures organization.

Town officials are recommending a “shelter-in-place” for anyone who lives within a one kilometre radius of the fire.

Under a “shelter-in-place” people are being advised to stay indoors within the affected area or leave and relocate to outside the one kilometre radius.

No homes are threatened at this time and fire crews, emergency services and Sask. Environment are assisting with containment efforts.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

As a result of the fire, garbage collection has been suspended until further notice.

The Kindersley waste and recycle centre is also closed to regular business.

Kindersley is approximately 190 kilometres west of Saskatoon.
