Hamilton police say a garbage truck driver is dead after a Tuesday morning crash on Highway 52 in Flamborough.
Investigators say the single-vehicle collision happened on a strip of the roadway just before 9:30 a.m. between Governor’s Road and Concession 2 Road West.
Const. Indy Bharaj told Global News the truck drove into a ditch and slammed into a nearby hydro pole.
“It’s believed that a motor vehicle, a garbage disposal truck, was traveling north on Highway 52 when it began to drift to the right, striking the guardrail and eventually falling into the ditch and striking a hydrofoil,”
said Bharaj.
The driver of the vehicle, a 64-year-old Cayuga resident, was “unresponsive” when transported to a trauma centre minutes after the crash, according to police.
Investigators later determined the driver suffered a medical emergency while operating the disposal truck. He was pronounced dead a short time later in hospital.
Highway 52 was closed between Governors Road and Concession 2 for hours.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information can reach out to Hamilton Police or Crime Stoppers.
