One man dead, driver facing impaired driving charges after highway crash

One person is dead and another is in hospital after a crash just outside of Winnipeg.

RCMP were called to the 3700 block of Henderson Highway around 4 a.m. Saturday morning.

Officers said a woman was driving north on Henderson when she lost control and the vehicle rolled. Officers found the vehicle in a ditch.

A 20-year-old man died in the crash. Police said he was not wearing his seat belt.

The driver, a 19-year-old woman from Winnipeg, and another female passenger were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver has been released from hospital and is in police custody. RCMP say she will face charges of impaired driving causing death.

The accident happened in Craig Stefanyshyn’s front yard.

“My wife and I were sleeping, we heard a loud thud,” said Stefanyshyn “We came outside, walked to the highway and noticed a car lying on its side.”

In a statement Saturday, RCMP again reminded Manitoba drivers of the dangers of impared driving: “One of the riskiest driving behaviours is getting behind the wheel of a vehicle while impaired, yet approximately 40 people lose their lives in Manitoba each year as a result of impaired driving.”

The stretch of highway was closed for several hours while officers investigated the scene.
