OPP in Brant County closed off westbound lanes on Highway 403 at Wayne Gretzky Parkway after part of a bridge collapsed on Monday afternoon.
Traffic was rerouted from the 403 for hours after a concrete barrier fell off an overpass and on to the Alexander Graham Bell Parkway (403) in Brantford, Ont., according to Cst. Conrad Vitalis.
A Ministry of Transportation (MTO) spokesperson said a portion of the bridge was hit by a piece of construction equipment being transported along the highway causing damage.
“When the bridge was struck, a girder protecting the bridge was dislodged and fell on the highway below, resulting in the closure all lanes of Highway 403,” the MTO’s Lee Alderson said in an e-mail.
No injuries were reported.
The roadway was reopened after repairs and an MTO safety inspection just before 6 a.m. Tuesday.
