Winkler pedestrian killed in collision

STARS Air Ambulance and emergency crews rushed late Thursday afternoon to what turned out to be a fatal crash in southern Manitoba.

Winkler police Chief Rick Hiebert said officers were called to Northlands Parkway Collegiate around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday after reports of a collision.

Hiebert said a pedestrian was hit but wouldn’t say if it was a student of the school.

Police did confirm the person hit in the crash died.

The high school opened this fall on Highway 14.

The speed limit is reduced to 50 kilometres per hour near the school but residents who live nearby said they have been concerned about pedestrians crossing.

“They should at least put up lights for crosswalks so there’s a warning for people who are going to be crossing,” said a nearby resident.

“There’s nothing to control the kids who have to take their chances crossing the road,” said another person who lives near the area. “It’s pretty crazy.”
