Toronto police have made an arrest after an “unprovoked attack” at a downtown Toronto subway station late Tuesday.
Mario Greco, a 30-year-old teacher in York Region, told Global News he was on a first date when a stranger who appeared “disturbed” sat near him at St. George Station. Five minutes after he sat down, Greco said the man returned.
“And I just found him holding something to my neck,” he said.
Toronto police said emergency crews responded to the incident at St. George Station around 11:30 p.m. after reports of a stabbing.
Greco said the man “darted off” quickly afterwards. The suspect reportedly fled the area onto Bedford Road.
“This is considered an unprovoked attack,” police said.
Police said Greco, the victim, suffered serious injuries as a result.
“My date came and found me and brought me to people that can help,” he said.
On Wednesday evening an arrest had been made, police announced. Police confirmed a 23-year-old Toronto man was in custody.
They said Danta Easterbrook was charged with one count of assault with a weapon. He will appear in court on Thursday.
The stabbing is the latest in a number of violent incidents reported on TTC property recently, including one on Sunday where a woman was pushed onto subway tracks at Bloor-Yonge station.
The woman, who suffered serious injuries from the fall, managed to crawl underneath the covered part of the platform to avoid being struck by the train that came through the station, police said.
An arrest was made in connection with that incident and the suspect is facing an attempted murder charge.
