Global News has confirmed his identity as retired photojournalist Ted Rhodes.

On Feb. 12 at around 3:30 p.m., Rhodes and a friend were skiing when RCMP said he “hit an icy portion and lost an edge, causing him to lose control and slide into a tree.”

The resort told Global News a skier was reported in distress on advanced terrain serviced by the Boom Chair.

The man was taken to hospital with critical injuries but died, police said.

“Our thoughts and care are with him and his family,” Fernie Alpine Resort said.

Mounties said the BC Coroners Service will “conduct its own investigation into the circumstances around the man’s death.”
