American fraudster arrested after hiding out in Beaconsfield motel

BEACONSFIELD, Que.  – The Chalets Beaconsfield Motel on Beaconsfield Avenue is a popular pit-stop for travelling businessmen.

Last week, many motel guests were surprised to see a team of police officers outside room 114.

The RCMP has confirmed that on September 10, officers arrested 29-year-old Daniel Marcotte.

Wanted in California for fraud, he was a suspect authorities considered armed and dangerous.

Police in the town of Seal Beach say that he scammed at least six seniors out of more than $100,000.

Marcotte allegedly called his elderly victims and tricked them into believing he was their grandson.

He reportedly claimed he was in a Mexican jail and asked for money.

“He would only go out at night when it’s dark out,” the Beaconsfield motel manager told Global News.

“He wouldn’t go out during the day.”

The manager asked Global News to hide his identity, for fear of reprisals.

It’s believed that Daniel Marcotte had been hiding out in the Montreal area for several months.

Police noted that he has used a number of aliases, including “Matthew Jones from Montreal-North.”

Marcotte is currently detained in a Quebec prison, awaiting extradition to the United States.
