Tragic turn for child with severe burns

OLIVER — A tragic turn after a heroic rescue in Oliver. An 8-year-old boy is dead after he sustained major burns to his body during a motorhome fire last month.

Cody O’Connor had been in the burn unit at Children’s Hospital since late August.

Cody had undergone surgeries and skin grafts to repair the burns, which ended up covering 40 percent of his body.

This week he was transferred the Canucks Place children’s hospice and Friday his family took him off life support.

Initially the story was about an act of heroism by Oliver’s fire chief, who smashed a window and rescued the boy from the back burning motorhome at the Centennial Campground.

It’s now a doubly whammy for the family who didn’t have insurance and lost most of their belongings in the fire.
