Price of seniors transit passes being reviewed

CALGARY- Discussions are underway about how much Calgary seniors should pay for transit.

Currently, they pay $95 per year for a pass—compared to an adult pass, which is $94 per month.

However, the price of a seniors pass has increased $60 over two years, leaving some seniors wondering if it’s worth paying for if they don’t use transit often.

Councillor Peter Demong argues they should have the option of paying $1.75 per trip—which is what youth pay.

“Lots of people say $100 a year is not much, but that is the same thing we said about the $126 tax increase we just had,” he says. “You start adding these things up, and somebody living on a moderate pension that doesn’t even come close to keep up with inflation…[is] losing ground.”

Low-income seniors currently pay $15 per year for a transit pass. Calgary Transit is in the process of reviewing its entire fee structure.
