Police are investigating a shooting in broad daylight Wednesday in Montreal’s Anjou borough that sent a 40-year-old man to hospital.
Police had previously said the incident occurred in the neighbouring borough of Saint-Leonard, but clarified it took place at around 12:40 p.m. on Jarry Street near the intersection of Ponts-de-Ce Avenue.
“The victim was sitting inside his SUV … while a man approached his vehicle and fired a gunshot toward the vehicle,” said Montreal police spokesperson Raphael Bergeron.
“He was shot at least one time to the upper body.”
The victim then drove himself to a nearby gas station on Metropolitain Boulevard to get help.
Bergeron said he was taken to hospital for treatment, after suffering serious injuries. While his condition was considered stable, police were still waiting for an update from medical authorities.
Meanwhile, officers believe the suspect approached the vehicle on foot before opening fire.
Bergeron said that while he is thought to have fled the scene on foot, he may have gotten into a vehicle shortly afterwards.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting are not yet known.
“The victim told police he doesn’t know exactly what happened,” Bergeron said, adding that he will be meeting with investigators as soon as his health status allows.
Two perimeters have been set up, according to Bergeron, “one scene on Jarry where the gun shell was found, the other one where the victim was found inside the gas station.”
