Edmonton police said it started just after 2:30 a.m., when a patrol officer attempted to pull over the black 2014 Ford Focus on Whitemud Drive westbound, near 91 Street.

Police said the traffic stop was initiated because the car’s registered owner was listed as a suspended driver.

The Ford reportedly did not stop for police and fled west at a high rate of speed, exiting the Whitemud at the Calgary Trail off ramp.

A short time later, the sedan was found at the intersection of Calgary Trail southbound and the Whitemud Drive overpass, where it had reportedly lost control and struck a light pole.

The woman driving the car, along with a 31-year-old man who was a passenger, died of their injuries at the scene.
