After being closed until midnight Friday due to a bomb threat, the UNB Fredericton campus has reopened.
In a statement Saturday, the Fredericton Police Force said that they had received a possible bomb threat on Friday to a UNB campus.
At the time the threat was received, it did not specify which campus, said police. All UNB campuses were evacuated, while police searched for anything considered to be suspicious.
Police said the investigation is ongoing, and that no charges have been laid at this time.
Around 1 p.m. on Friday, the police force tweeted that it was investigating a file at the UNB Fredericton campus and asked people to stay away.
Shortly after, UNB told people to evacuate and residence students to shelter in place at its campuses in Fredericton, Saint John and Moncton, along with St. Thomas University. The NBCC Fredericton campus and the Saint John’s Allied Health Education Centre abruptly shut down as well.
Few details were made public about the situation, but UNB said just after 6 p.m. that there were no further updates and access to the campus remains restricted. It said it would keep the university community updated through the UNBsafe app.
St. Thomas University said shortly after that Fredericton police and UNB security continue to check campus areas and are controlling access to the campus this evening.
“We will provide notification when campus reopens and restrictions lift,” St. Thomas said in a tweet. “Thank you for your patience, understanding, and co-operation today.”
As of 8 p.m. there have been no further updates from NBCC.
The incident prompted the cancellation of a Quebec Major Junior Hockey League pre-season hockey game between the Moncton Wildcats and the Saint John Sea Dogs at the Aitken University Centre Friday evening.
The UNB Reds said on Twitter that it would not be rescheduled and they will “have detailed information for ticket holders on Monday.”
