Manslaughter charge laid after Calgary man dies in fight in downtown apartment building

Police have laid a manslaughter charge in the death of a man who died in hospital following a fight in a downtown Calgary apartment building this week.

Officers and paramedics were called to the apartment building in the 600 block of 5 Avenue S.W. just before 10 p.m. Tuesday for reports of a fight between two people, police said Wednesday.

Alberta EMS said Tuesday night that paramedics received reports of someone being attacked with a weapon.

Calgary police said a man, identified as 19-year-old Antonio Wallace-Murillo, was found in the apartment in life-threatening condition and rushed to hospital, where he later died “of injuries sustained in the altercation.”

Three people in the apartment were arrested, however two were released.

On Thursday, police said 18-year-old Justin Riley Richardson was charged with manslaughter in Wallace-Murillo’s death.

“Investigators believe the victim and the suspect knew each other. It is alleged a verbal altercation occurred which escalated to a physical confrontation,” police said.

“The suspect is alleged to have stabbed the victim, causing fatal injuries.”
