Dog attack injures woman and kills one of her dogs

Samantha Westergreen is still in shock after witnessing a dog attack across the street from her house.
On Wednesday morning she woke up to screaming, looked out her window and saw a pair of Rottweilers attacking a woman and her two small dogs.

“I grabbed the one dog that wasn’t attacked yet and through it in my back yard, then I went back and the dog was still attacking her,” says Westergreen.

The 59-year-old woman had been walking her two Schnauzers on leash, down this sidewalk on 23rd Street North.
Two large dogs on the loose attacked; the woman did what she could to protect her pets.

“The girl was just destroyed with all the scratches and blood on her face,” says Westergreen.

A good samaritan stopped and called 911.
Westergreen took the woman across the street to her yard while the dog owner tried to comfort her severely injured pet.

“She said to her dog, it’s ok if you want to leave us know, I love you, this isn’t our last time together, I’ll be there with you soon; It was just so heart breaking to see and I couldn’t imagine if it was my dog, it was so graphic,” says Westergreen.

Lethbridge Regional Police along with Animal Services both responded to the call, when they arrived the two Rottweilers were taken into their care and the owner was contacted.

“The owner of the dogs feels really badly I’m told, and has signed both dogs over to us so they are the property of the City of Lethbridge and they will be quarantined for 14 days, says Regulatory Services Manager, Duane Ens.

The small injured dog died as a result of the attack and city officials say they are making the publics safety its top priority.

“The attack was very vicious, and based on that and the dogs behavior we have decided to put the dogs down,” says Ens.

Westergreen says she doesn’t understand how the attack happened, and how a routine walk ended in tragedy.
“She was just innocently walking down the street and now her dog is gone.”

A decision hasn’t been made yet if the dog owner will be fined or be banned from owning any other dogs.
