Const. David Hopkinson said emergency crews were called to the area of Carlingview Drive and Constellation Court, north of Dixon Road, around 4:12 p.m.

“We were advised that two cars had become involved in a collision,” Hopkinson said.

“One car had been struck so hard it was pushed into a pole and the pole … was going to fall. The other car had left the roadway, flipped and struck a building.”

Hopkinson said when emergency crews arrived, the victims were trapped in one of the vehicles with “very, very serious injuries.” Firefighters were able to extract them from the car, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was rushed to hospital where he also died.

Hopkinson didn’t confirm which vehicle the victims were in, but said the other was parked and empty.

Hopkinson added that the vehicle that struck the building may have also hit a gas line and firefighters evacuated the building.

An investigation into what led to the incident is ongoing, but Hopkinson said the amount of damage “tends to indicate that speed may have been a factor.”
