EDMONTON- Thousands of runners were up bright and early Sunday morning, to take part in the 22nd annual Edmonton Marathon and other related events.

The 42.2 kilometre marathon started at Northlands Park. The top female finisher says she felt really strong throughout the entire race.

“It’s definitely one of my best. Not a PB (personal best) but it’s okay, I still did really well and I felt strong,” Alisa MacDonald explained. “There were parts where I got a little lonely, because it got really spread out. But then when we did the turnaround and we were passing all the half marathoners it was really motivating.”

MacDonald, a St. Albert native, says it was great to run, and win, the race on home turf.

“It feels great to win a local race,” she said with a smile on her face. “I had a great support crew today and I think about them waiting for me at the finish line and I know they’re going to be proud of me. That’s motivating.”

“It’s very nice to see some of the local stars lit up the course today,” added Running Room founder John Stanton.

The top prize in the men’s marathon went to Toronto’s Lucas McAneney.

“I go through the same negative and positive battles throughout the second half of the race, for sure. So it’s just a matter of overcoming those mental battles in your brain.

“It was fun. Perfect day, the weather was great,” McAneney said. “The whole city was wonderful. I had a great experience.”

Stanton says not only was it a great day for the runners, it was also a great day for spectators.

“What’ll happen is, a lot of people that are standing on the sidelines will be in the game of running next year when they come back and they’ll be lacing them up.”
