Blackfalds RCMP said emergency crews responded to the derailment along Highway 2A in Lacombe County at around 8:15 p.m.

RCMP said four of the derailed cars contained liquid asphalt and one of the cars had a leak which crews worked to contain and manage.

Lacombe city officials said 32,000 litres of liquid asphalt was released.

There were no fires or injuries as a result of the derailment, according to RCMP.

A home near the derailment was evacuated as a precaution, but the residents were able to return, police said.

Canadian Pacific Rail and Lacombe County Emergency Management remained on scene Saturday and Highway 2A was expected to blocked to traffic for a portion of the day as crews continued to investigate and clean up.
