Police said Mounties were called to By-the-Lake Park just before 2:30 p.m. after someone reported that a girl went under the water and did not resurface.

In a news release, the RCMP said witnesses told them the girl was with friends and family and fell into the water and never emerged.

In addition to the RCMP, firefighters and paramedics helped to conduct ground and water searches for the girl.

Just before 6:30 p.m., a member of the Central Alberta Recovery Divers Service found the teen.

She was taken to Wetaskiwin Hospital. Despite life-saving efforts, police said she was pronounced dead in hospital.

“RCMP offer our sincerest condolences to family, friends, and the community,” police said. “Wetaskiwin RCMP would like to thank the public and those involved in the search.

“No further updates will be provided.”
