Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson Const. Gary O’Brien said the call came in around 3:30 p.m., prompting a massive response in the area of the Rock City Plaza.

Mounties said a man was found dead in a parked vehicle from apparent gunshot wounds. A silver SUV could be seen partially covered by a tarp behind police tape.

Mounties tracked suspects to the Best Western Hotel on Metral Drive, where they seized a vehicle and searched for forensic evidence.

O’Brien said three people had been arrested.

He added it was too early to say whether the attack was targeted.

“It would just be speculation to say that,” he said.

Police are appealing for any dash cam video shot in the area of the Rock City Plaza between 3:15 p.m. and 3:45 p.m.
