Vancouver Island University offers free tuition for youth in care

Vancouver Island University has announced it will waive tuition fees for students who have grown up in the care of the government.

It is the first such program in the province.

“It will be the first step in overcoming financial barriers that make it difficult for these students to consider and achieve success in higher education,” University said in a press release.

The university was in discussions with the B.C. Representative for Children and Youth to launch the program.

Earlier this year, Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond had suggested free tuition to ensure children in foster care have access to a post-secondary education.

The pilot project will begin in September of this year.
