The Prairie Valley School Division says it’s dealing with a recent rash of vandalism at some of its schools.
Over the past three to four weeks, there have been 10 reported incidences, including schools in Balgonie and White City.
“Broken windows, roof damage, mechanical, electrical, playground areas have been damaged,” said Luc Lerminiaux, PVSD director of education and CEO.
“We’re grateful no one has been hurt because some of these systems are extremely dangerous with very high voltage and heights when they’re accessing the roof.”
Lerminiaux describes the acts of vandalism as extremely disappointing due to both costs and the mental impact on students.
“We know our students are extremely proud of their schools and it needs to be a safe place to learn,” Lerminiaux said.
“School is already challenging enough with COVID protocols. We certainly don’t need to add more to their anxiety, their feelings of insecurity and safety.”
Lerminiaux said security measures are in place and that PSVD is working with RCMP.
“We’ve taken steps in response which includes increased security patrols, motion center sensors, additional lighting and alarms,” Lerminiaux said
“We’re also looking in other into other security measures as well.”
The cost of the damage is unknown at this time as PVSD continues to work with an insurance company.
Lerminiaux is asking the public to be aware and to report to police if they see any more acts of vandalism.
