Fire crews were called Monday morning to a blaze at a home in the city’s northwest.
EMS said emergency crews were called to the home at 29 Citadel Close at 8:49 a.m.
The Calgary Fire Department said crews arrived to “large volumes of flame” and heavy black smoke coming from the attached front garage of the two-storey home.
The CFD said firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire and keep it from spreading to neighbouring homes. However, one nearby house suffered exterior fire damage.
Two people in the house were able to escape, but the CFD said one person went back into the house to rescue a cat. That person was assessed on scene and transported to hospital with “smoke-related injuries,” the CFD said.
A spokesperson with EMS said the person was taken to hospital in stable condition.
Strong winds in the city played a role in the battle.
“We had a very challenging wind out of the north, with the garage also facing north, which was pushing the fire into the home,” said Rouge Ashmead, north district chief with the CFD.
“Wind always presents a tremendous challenge for us. Crews did a fantastic job making the right tactical decisions to make that a minimal factor.”
The cause of the fire is not known, but the damage to the home is extensive.
