According to a statement issued by the service Monday evening, officers were called to the central mountain mall just before 5 a.m.

Police said the man was in a parked car and it was reported he was in crisis. A perimeter was set up in the area around the car and the statement said officers “began communications.”

“A search of the vehicle revealed the presence of a suspicious device. The emergency response unit attended the scene, investigated the device and confirmed it was a device built with the intent to explode and rendered it inoperable,” the update said.

The man was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The statement didn’t specify what specific kind of explosive device was found.

Police said the accused was charged with being in possession of an explosive device. He was scheduled to appear in a Hamilton court on Tuesday.
