Cochrane mother heartbroken after memorial for son disappears

COCHRANE, AB – A Cochrane mother who suffered the tragic loss of her son in December says she is heartbroken after someone took down a memorial created in his honour.

17-year-old Brandon Thomas was killed in a car crash along Highway 22, on December 6th.

Police say Thomas’ vehicle collided with pickup truck allegedly driving the wrong way down the highway by a suspected impaired driver.

Brandon’s family members have found a small amount of comfort by visiting a memorial they created along the side of the highway where he was killed.

However, the already distraught family suffered another blow last week, when someone took down the memorial they had created.

It was more than just a simple cross, family members and friends had left all sorts of mementos at the site to remind them of Brandon.

Now, they’ve been forced to rebuild.

“I try to remember that that the worst thing that [could have] happened to our family has already happened,” says mother Kim Thomas. “Brandon is already gone…. but this is like erasing him.”

Cochrane RCMP are investigating, and have already ruled out highway crews and area property owners.

They say whoever removed the memorial will face charges if caught.

The Thomas family hopes whoever stole the memorial will see the pain they’ve caused, and return the special items.
