One person is dead and three children were seriously injured after a collision between a car and a train in Rosthern, Sask.

RCMP said it happened Sunday at around 10 a.m.

An eastbound car on Highway 312 crossing the tracks when it was struck by the southbound train.

Paramedics declared the driver of the car, a 30-year-old woman, dead at the scene. RCMP have not released her name.

Three girls in the car, believed by police to be between the ages of seven to 12, were taken to hospital with what police believe to be serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Rosthern RCMP said the rail crossing equipment, including the lights and the bell, appeared operational while police officers were on scene.

The rail line is privately owned, police added.
