TORONTO – A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the city of Toronto.
The watch is in effect for much of southern Ontario from London to Kingston.
Tornado watches have also been issued for several areas including Hanover, Dundalk, Owen Sounds, Blue Mountains, Hanover, Dandalk as well as Bancroft, Haliburton, Western Algonquin Park and surrounding areas.
A cold front is responsible for the thunderstorms and the possibility of severe weather. It is pushing across southern Ontario, extending to eastern Ontario. Some of the storms could include damaging winds, heavy downpours and hail
A supercell is a large, single-cell thunderstorm capable of producing tornadoes.
“The GTA and southwestern Ontario will be more prone to damaging straight line winds as a squall line could develop and race through late this afternoon. There will also be a few storms developing ahead of the front by mid afternoon. The biggest concern in Toronto will be from about 4 to 8 p.m,” Farnell said. “Heavy rain is likely but because the storms will be quicker moving flooding is less likely.”
